Mipo Odubeko’s dream start, Manny Longelo waits, Thierry Nevers scores – West Ham loan latest

West Ham United currently have seven players out on loan in the lower leagues of English football and here is a look at how all seven are currently getting on with their respective loan clubs

By Jonty Colman

West Ham United currently have ten players out on loan getting chances of minutes away from the first-team.

While Nikola Vlasic (Torino), Arthur Masuaku (Besiktas), and Nathan Trott (Vejle) are currently across Europe in Italy, Turkey and Denmark respectively, the other seven of the Hammers away on loan are all currently in the lower leagues of English football.

Joseph Anang (Derby County)

Goalkeeper Joseph Anang is yet to make his debut for Derby County since joining them on loan from the Hammers last month.

The goalkeeper did make the bench for their goalless draw with Shrewsbury Town shortly after arriving at Pride Park but has not been included in a matchday squad since.

Derby currently have Joe Wildsmith and Scott Loach both above Anang in the club’s pecking order in goal, likely to limit his game time further in the season barring injuries and suspensions.

Manny Longelo (Birmingham City)

Left-back Manny Longelo joined Championship side Birmingham City in the closing days of the transfer window on loan but like Anang, is yet to feature for his new side since joining them on loan.

Longelo arrives in the West Midlands having previously played twice for David Moyes’ first-team, getting a full 90 minutes in the Europa League last season, as well as an additional 21 minutes during a Carabao Cup third-round win over Hull City two years ago.

The 21-year-old will be hoping to make his Championship debut on Wednesday night against West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion in England’s second tier.

Daniel Chesters (Colchester United)

Closer to East London is Daniel Chesters, who is out in League Two gaining experience with Colchester United.

Chesters has come off the bench twice in League Two since his arrival in defeat to Tranmere Rovers and a draw with Hartlepool United, making his full debut in a Papa John’s Trophy win over Brighton and Hove Albion’s under-21s last week, playing 65 minutes before coming off.

With appearances in all three of Colchester’s games so far since the move, Chesters is continuing to grow off the pre-season he had, scoring in a friendly win over League One side Ipswich Town.

Mipo Odubeko (Port Vale)

Speaking of League One and Port Vale is where you would find Mipo Odebuko at present, with the teenage forward earning minutes with the Staffordshire-based side.

The 19-year-old made his full debut in the Papa John’s Trophy last month, playing the duration of a 1-0 group stage win over League Two side Stockport County.

Just four days later, Odubeko was handed a full league debut against Cheltenham Town and marked the occasion with a goal against the Robins.

Armstrong Okoflex (Swansea City)

Less than a week after winning his West Ham debut in Denmark during the Europa Conference League qualifying win over Viborg, Armstrong Okoflex switch Scandinavia for south Wales, joining Championship side Swansea City on loan.

The winger was left on the bench for their draw with Stoke City shortly after arriving but has since made his debut for the Swans from the bench, playing in the final 30 minutes of their 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

With former clubs including Arsenal and Celtic on his CV, as well as debuts in recent weeks for both the Hammers and Swansea, a full season in the Championship could prove to be really crucial for the winger, who has played for both the Republic of Ireland and England at youth level.

Thierry Nevers (Newport County)

Just an hour away down the coast from Swansea is where fellow forward Thierry Nevers is on loan, in League Two with Newport County.

Nevers, who scored eight goals at under-21 level last season, has been a regular starter since his move across the Severn Bridge and while he was left on the bench for wins over Exeter City and Portsmouth in the Papa John’s Trophy and Carabao Cup respectively, he has started in all three league games since his move.

His debut came in at home to Tranmere Rovers before scoring and providing an assist during his away debut, a 4-0 win against Harrogate Town before keeping his place for the defeat to Exeter City in his other game since.

Jacob Knightbridge (Harrow Borough)

Young goalkeeper Jacob Knightbridge is currently with Harrow Borough in the Southern League Premier Division South, the seventh tier of English football.

Knightbridge has played in all seven of Harrow’s matches since his move in all competitions but has had mixed fortunes on the pitch in that time. Keeping a clean sheet on debut in a goalless draw with Tiverton Town, Harrow currently sit 20th in the 22-team league, with two draws and four losses from their opening six games.

Knightbridge and Harrow were on the wrong end of a 7-0 defeat to league leaders Weston-super-Mare last month and the young goalkeeper was also shown a red card in Harrow’s FA Cup qualifying round 4-1 defeat to Bracknell Town last weekend.
